History of Acai berry is somewhat mysterious and not many people are aware of it. Before we get the beneficial effects of Acai berry let’s have a look at why it was called Acai berry. Tribes of Brazilian called this fruit “ica-ica” which means crying fruit.

Why do we know it as Acai: Chief of the Amazonian tribes who lived in forests had a daughter whose name was Iaca? Just to solve the issue of shortage of food, chief ordered all the children be sacrificed. The order was applicable for everyone including Iaca. As her child also met the same fate as other children of the tribe, Iaca kept mourning her death for many days and night until she heard the voice of a crying child one night.

Her joy knew no boundaries when she found her child near a palm tree which had dark purple fruit on it. Next morning tribesmen found her dead body next to the tree. It was then that the fruit of that tree was tested by those tribal and they found it to be very tasty and their hunger was satisfied. They felt a new surge of energy in their weak bodies. This was how people started calling this fruit Acai which is Iaca spelled backwards.
